Complementary and Alternative Therapies (Non-traditional treatments like herbal medicine or acupuncture)

Not Routinely Funded

Complementary and alternative therapies compromise of a wide range of disciplines which are not considered part of all mainstream care and considered low priority treatments.

There is currently insufficient evidence of clinical or cost effectiveness and safety and therefore on this basis, these treatments will not be routinely commissioned by Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board.

All complementary and alternative therapies are not routinely funded, and a list of examples is shown below, but is not exhaustive:

  • Alexander Technique
  • Anthroposophical Medicine
  • Applied Kenesiology
  • Aromatherapy
  • Art Therapy / Dance Therapy / Drama Therapy
  • Autogenic Training
  • Ayurveda
  • Bach and other Flower Remedies
  • Balneotherapy (spa therapy)
  • Chinese Medicines
  • Chiropractic Therapy
  • Clinical Ecology
  • Colonic Irrigation
  • Crystal Therapy
  • Dowsing
  • Environmental Medicine
  • Healing
  • Herbal Medicine
  • Homeopathy
  • Hypnosis / Hypnotherapy
  • Massage
  • Naturopathy
  • Nutritional Therapy
  • Osteopathy
  • Reflexology
  • Reiki
  • Shiatsu
  • Yoga Therapy

Other complementary and alternative therapies not listed should also be regarded as not routinely funded unless explicitly included within mainstream commissioned pathways.

Note: This policy does not cover procedures delivered as part of palliative care provision when funded by charitable sources.

Cases for Individual Consideration

On a case-to-case basis, patients might be eligible for intervention, in consideration of their exceptionality. The requesting clinician must provide information to support the case for being considered an exception, by submitting an individual funding request.
