Pessary Fitting and Remove, and Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, bowel, or the top of the vagina, shift from their normal position and bulge into the vagina. While prolapse is not life-threatening, it can cause pain and discomfort and may lead to urinary incontinence.

Adults who have bladder, bowel, prolapse or other pelvic floor dysfunction and are registered to a Norfolk GP, can self-refer to NCHC’s Continence Service by calling 01603 216021.

In many cases, doing pelvic floor exercises will strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and may well relieve your symptoms. However, medical treatment may be necessary in some instances.

If you suspect you have pelvic organ prolapse, the first step is to consult your doctor. Depending on the severity and type of prolapse, your doctor may recommend a pessary. A pessary is a silicone ring inserted into the vagina to support the organs affected by prolapse and relieve symptoms.
